Gerard Butler, 39, has been charged, by city prosecutors, with misdemeanor battery in connection with a disorderly fight with a paparazzo.

Records show that on Wednesday prosecutors filed the charge in a Hollywood courthouse.

Frank Mateljan, a Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman, said Butler faces up to six months in jail if he is convicted.

Mateljan said the actor had a run-in with a photographer early on October 7 of 2008 in Hollywood after leaving the premiere party for the film “RocknRolla.”

Butler’s manager, Alan Siegel, said that Butler was compelled to have his driver stop the car after a paparazzo repeatedly ran red lights and almost hit two pedestrians.

Butler’s attorney, Blair Berk, said Butler is not required to and won’t appear in court on the charge.

Butler is best-known for his role in the movie “300,” and starred in “RocknRolla.” Butler’s next big screen release will be this summer’s “The Ugly Truth,” a romantic comedy. It will be starring Butler and Katherine Heigl.
