The standards of a hospital in Britain have claimed approximately 1,200 lives.
- One man waited in the waiting room for over four hours without any pain medication while his broken elbow was tearing through his skin.
- Another person waited four hours also and died before being seen. The severe abdominal pains that this person was experiencing were caused by a ruptured aneurysm which wasn’t discovered until after his death.
- Patients were given penicillin, even though they were allergic to penicillin.
- Diabetic patient left with no insulin.
- Heart slowing drugs such as lignocaine were given to resuscitated patients.
- Nurses who lacked the knowledge to use heart monitors simply turned them off
- Many faulty vital intravenous drips
And that’s not the end of it! There were bodily fluids found on the floor and restroom. Even blood and feces were found in the restroom.
One patient described his experience at the hospital as “nothing more than a laboratory for C.diff and MRSA cultures.” Both C.diff and MRSA are diseases that can be acquired in an unsanitary environment and can be life threatening.
Chairman Sir Ian Kennedy said that “There is no doubt that patients will have suffered and some of them will have died as a result.” The was confirmed when the Healthcare COmmission mentioned that around 400 lives have been claimed unnecessarily and that the toll could reach 1,200. The Commission launched an investigation last year in March when it saw that the death rate had increased. Investigators have stated that there were violations on “virtually every stage” in emergency care.
One of the chief personnel, chief executive Martin Yeates, was suspended with full pay while the new head of the hospital reforms. There was public apology made by Gordon Brown, “We do apologize to all those people who have suffered from the mistakes that have been made in the Stafford hospital.”
Despite all these problems, the Mid Staffordshire Trust was awarded elite foundation status, a mark of “excellence”, and continued to receive positive yearly reports. Makes you wonder what exactly are the qualifying factors to receive such a mark.
