Letterman Says Someone Is Blackmailing Him

We have learned the identity of the alleged extortionist who was arrested today for attempted grand larceny in the first degree. He is Robert “Joe” Halderman, 51- years-old, who lives in Norwalk, Connecticut. He is a producer for the show “48 Hours” and has been suspended from the show until the results of the investigation.
David Letterman said someone had demanded $2 million from him in return for not revealing the secret on Letterman’s sexual liaisons in his office.
Letterman said on his show tonight he received a package 3 weeks ago from someone claiming to have information about sexual liasions between Letterman and some female co-workers on his staff.
The blackmailer said Letterman would have to pay him $2 million to keep the information a secret.
Letterman said he contacted the Special Prosecution Bureau of the Manhattan D.A.’s office. He said the D.A. investigated and cut a phony $2 million check to the alleged blackmailer who was arrested today.
Letterman testified today before the grand jury. In his testimony, he said that he acknowledged sexual relationships with members of his staff.
Letterman married his girlfriend last March. Before they were married they had been together for 23 years.
