Wisconsin Cheese Industry Conference

The 2009 U.S, Championship Cheese Contest was held in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Twenty-four judges had to pick the top three best cheeses in the U.S.from approximately 1,360 entries.

The first place winner was John Griffiths’ SarVecchio parmesan. Neither John, from Sartori Food Corp. nor Patrick Mugan, vice president of Sartori Food Corp. were not present when the winners were announced. So you can only imagine their surprise when a flock of reporters awaited their comment.

Second place winner was the “Classico,” a hard goat’s milk cheese, made by Team TFI One, a group of workers from Tumalo Farms in Bend, Oregon., a group of workers from Tumalo Farms in Bend, Oregon. Third place winner was a medium cheddar made by Pat Whalen from McCadam Cheese in Chateaugay, N.Y.

This year’s first place winner Mugan said, “People see the awards, and they will actually put (the cheese) in their mouth and taste the wonderful flavors.”

DiMento, spokesman for Agri-Mark, said, “We’re real excited to win a national competition like. It makes a tangible difference in our marketing, which helps our sales.”

The Wisconsin Cheese Industry Conference will be held in La Crosse, Wisconsin this year on April 23rd. Usually cheese makers don’t attend this event but this year’s winners will receive their awards at the this Conference on April 23rd.
